Toddler: Spinach (苋菜) Tofu (豆腐) Porridge
Ingredients
- 1 handful of white rice (or about 1/8 cup using the measuring cup from rice cooker)
- 1 bowl boiling hot water
- Small handful of Chinese spinach (苋菜)
- 1/8 of a tofu block (about 2 tablespoon)
- 1/8 of a shallot
- small bit of ginger (aprox ½ cm size)
Method
- Prepare the porridge base with the shallot and ginger. (See here or here).
- Pick only the leafy part of the spinach (a little tender stalk is fine). Wash and cut into small pieces suitable for the age of your toddler.
- When porridge is done, add in spinach and cook for another 5-10 mins.
- Cut the tofu into small cubes about ¼ cm size (like those usually in miso soup). Add into porridge and allow to simmer for another 5 mins.
makes me feel like eating too.. btw, what’s chinese spinach? is it the one tat popeye eats?
the one i use is call “yin choi” in cantonese, or “hian chai” in hokkien. There is another type of spinach call “por choi” in cantonese, which can be used for porridge in this way too.
i would prefer por choi
How long does it take to cook it overstove..I dnt ve a slow cooker.thks
In most cooking, you can mimic slow cooker cooking on a stove. You need to have a good pot (thick steel bottom, and heavy glass or steel cover) so that heat do not escape easily. Use a very small flame just to keep the content at boiling temperature. Judging from this recipe, you need quite a small pot as big pot for little content loose heat very fast and the porridge may not cook very well. Hope this helps.
